About the Department of Agricultural Engineering

 The Department of Agricultural Engineering at the Faculty of Agriculture in Novi Sad was established in 1963 by merging the Agricultural Machinery and Mechanical Engineering Unit and the Amelioration and Agricultural Civil Engineering Unit. A number of changes in the organizational structure occurred thereafter and the Department of Agricultural Engineering assumed its present form in 2003.

Nowadays, the Department of Agricultural Engineering has a leading role in the field of agricultural engineering in the AP Vojvodina and gains high esteem throughout the Republic of Serbia. The activities at the Department are focused on the educational, scientific, research and specialist work. The Department of Agricultural Engineering administers two study programmes: Agricultural Engineering and Agro-Industrial Engineering. Via scientific, research and development projects, the Department promotes close cooperation with cognate scientific and research institutions and industrial organizations, which results in new scientific achievements, products and technologies.

Why Study Agricultural Engineering?

The purpose of Agricultural Engineering study programme is to create highly educated professionals with comprehensive engineering knowledge, which would serve as a foundation for original development and/or application of the knowledge and ideas from the field of technical and technological sciences in agricultural industry. Upon completion of the study programme, the students will acquire competencies in the following fields:

  • agricultural engineering,
  • mechanical design,
  • exploitation of agricultural engineering,
  • process and thermal engineering,
  • drying and storing agricultural materials,
  • application of various technologies in agricultural production,
  • rational energy use.

  Highly educated experts in the field of agricultural engineering are very important for enhancing and managing agricultural resources. Therefore, the purpose of the study programme of Agricultural Engineering is to create highly educated professionals who would facilitate establishing rational and sustainable agricultural production spanning from the field to the end user. These future professionals will be trained to apply contemporary agricultural engineering in agricultural production. The Department of Agricultural Engineering provides an ideal environment for developing the abovementioned fields and educating the required experts because it boasts adequate human and technical resources.

Principal Objectives of the Study Programme

The principal objective of the study programme is to create Bachelors of Science in Agriculture with the comprehensive knowledge of technological processing, agricultural engineering in agricultural industry and primary agricultural production, as well as creating conditions for the preservation of agricultural product quality.

In order to accomplish the defined objective, the students should:

  • acquire synthetic knowledge in the field of biotechnical sciences, technological engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical and computer engineering;
  • learn to apply, in a professional manner, contemporary and favourable technological procedures and techniques of utilising agricultural engineering;
  • be capable of developing new technologies in agricultural production independently upon completion of the study programme;
  •  be able to educate others and thus facilitate extending beneficial and cost-effective utilisation of agricultural engineering upon completion of the study programme;
  • develop teamwork skills;
  • understand and practically resolve the issues in the field of agricultural engineering.

Employment Possibilities upon Completion of the Study Programme

  • Agricultural machinery pools
  • Industrial facilities for grain processing and storing (silos, dryers, mills, feed mills, oil mill, centres for seed material processing, finished products storages)
  • Industrial facilities for fruit and vegetable processing and storing (cold storages, drying facilities, marinating facilities, facilities for juice production, facilities for non-chemical preservation, packaging facilities, etc.)
  • Service centres and office networks
  • Extension agencies
  • Secondary and higher education
  • Scientific and development institutes and centres for monitoring agricultural engineering activities
  • Inspection services for monitoring agricultural engineering activities
  • Insurance and investment companies in the field of agricultural engineering
  •

Possibilities for Further Education

Upon completion of the undergraduate academic studies in cognate sciences, it is possible to enrol in master’s and doctoral study programme. Further education is even possible abroad with scholarships for all higher education levels.

Why Study Agro-Industrial Engineering?

The study programme Agro-Industrial Engineering provides students with knowledge in agricultural, technical and technological sciences, creating highly skilled experts, competent to independently manage and develop both technological procedures of processing agricultural products and auxiliary processing equipment.

Experts specialised in processing of products from primary agricultural production, including field crop and vegetable production, perennial crop production and livestock production, are of great importance for improving and managing agricultural resources.

The purpose of this study programme is to educate highly skilled experts who will use their knowledge to contribute to development of rational and sustainable agricultural production – from the field to the end user. Students will be trained to use modern technological processes and modern equipment in processing of agricultural products as well to properly organise this kind of production and accompanying activities.

Principal Objectives of the Study Programme

The objective of the study programme Agro-Industrial Engineering is education of engineers who will have comprehensive knowledge of technological processes and processing equipment used for obtaining intermediate or final products in agricultural industry.

During the studies, students are trained to work directly in production, for which they need to be highly skilled. They are also trained to professionally apply modern and efficient technologies in processing of agricultural products from field crop, vegetable, fruit, wine and livestock production. The priority of this study programme is acquiring academic education, which also includes engineering skills: working in industrial plants for processing of agricultural products, management and control of certain technological operations or entire processing procedures, independent construction of processing equipment, designing technological processes in agricultural industry and organisation of processing equipment installation.

A special objective of this study programme is to provide students with the possibility to use the acquired knowledge and skills for their further professional development, and to gain a higher level of professional and scientific education, including graduate academic studies – master’s, specialist and doctoral studies.

Employment Possibilities upon Completion of the Study Programme

  • Industrial facilities for processing and storage of grains (silos, dryers, mills, feed mixing facilities, oil mills, seed processing centres, final products warehouses);
  • Industrial facilities for processing and storing of fruit and vegetables (cold storages, drying facilities, marination facilities, juices production facilities, canning facilities for non-chemical preservation; packaging facilities, etc).
  • Jobs involving independent designing of technological processes, facilities for processing of agricultural products and auxiliary processing equipment (project design offices, independent businesses);
  • Jobs involving environmental impact assessment and determining measures for hazard elimination (project design offices, independent businesses);
  • Extension services and specialist services;
  • Secondary and higher education institutions;
  • Scientific and developmental institutes and organisations for development and monitoring of activities in the field of agro-industrial engineering;
  • Other business entities.

Possibilities for Further Education

Bachelor of Science in Agriculture who has completed the study programme Agro-Industrial Engineering has the possibilities for further professional development at master’s and doctoral studies in related scientific fields. Students can continue their professional development also abroad with scholarships for all levels of studying.
